Madison is a city of great supper clubs and the Esquire is the oldest.
It opened in 1947 and is easily recognized by the sign of a steer-mermaid figurine hoisting a martini. Or something like that. The Esquire has storied roots with the nearby Oscar Mayer plant (opened in 1919) but this supper club is known for its steaks of certified Angus beef.
Bonus points for being in the Madison village of Maple Bluff, the birthplace of Go-Go’s guitarist Jane Wiedlin.
Sorry, Jane Wiedlin was not born in Maple Bluff. She moved here in 2008, and I’m fairly certain she didn’t stay here for long. Wiedlin was born in Oconomowoc and only lived there and West Allis a few years before moving to LA.
